CrossFit... What is it?

A couple of years ago Zumba was all the rage. You couldn't watch TV without a commercial selling videos. Xbox Kinect also made a few Kinect video games for it. It was a huge new revolution! Now it's died down. I still do Zumba for many reasons. 1. The rage had died down, it's not nearly as jammed packed in classes now. 2. It's great cardio 3. it's so much fun 4. It has given me so much more confidence with my husband ;) and in the very rare times I go to a club. Zumba is a great workout, I do it a few times in the week, I highly recommend it for anyone. I'd even recommend it for those who want to CrossFit but are still a little overweight or are scared to try it out. It's great for working out your heart. Plus, Zumba is starting to do songs that are just about your arms, legs or abs! so you get to start working out those muscles as well. I digress.

But now I feel like the new thing is CrossFit.
What exactly is CrossFit?
Well, according to Wikipedia, CrossFit is a "strength and conditioning program designed to help people gain a broad and general fitness". CrossFit incorporates a lot of different exercises together. I have been to a class and I gotta say it was pretty intense. It's not something you can jump into expecting to come out feeling like a champ. That class kicked my ass. In the classes defense though, I was very overweight. If I tried to do what I do now I would have had the same reaction.

The above hierarchy is basically what CrossFit is about. CrossFit has the same concept of Zumba: keep moving. "Constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement" You want your heart rate to keep going, never giving it a rest, working those muscles to get stronger. In CrossFit you're involving your own body weight (also like Zumba) or using heavy weights.
When I was the class, we did a lot of squats, lunges, push ups, high intensity cardio moves. Some with weights some without. I did most of it without weights just because it was my first time, which I recommend for anyone.

The point of CrossFit is to work out every single muscle, in a different way. A lot of workouts aren't just squats or lunges. You could also work out your shoulders as well or your back while doing squats or lunges.

I highly recommend this style of exercise for those who are a bit more fit, those who have lost a lot of their wight already and want to tone and tighten. Your heart rate is going to go through the roof and if your heart can't handle it, it could be dangerous. Also, make sure you're doing these workouts properly. If you do a simple move the wrong way, you could seriously injure something or pull a muscle.

What are your opinions on CrossFit? Do you have any workouts that you do and love?

Jillian Michaels Whey Protein Powder - Vanilla Cream Shake

Price: $25 for about 14 scoops
Taste: I wasn't a fan of the Vanilla Cream Shake. It popped out way too much in my smoothies. I usually only put a half of a banana in my smoothies and I had to put a whole one in just to mask the taste of this, and even then, it didn't work well.
Only 100 calories per scoop.
Protein: 15 g of protein for 1 scoop.

I read a lot of reviews on Myfitnesspal and basically, what I got out of it all is that this protein is made by a brand called Pure Protein. From what I gather, they made new containers, slapped her name on it and hiked up the price.

My final review:
$25 for less scoops of protein and even then you only get 15 g of protein? Plus the bad taste. Jillian Michaels is amazing, but ladies, just because she is on it, doesn't mean it's the way to go. Not worth it.

Body Fortress Whey Protein Powder - Vanilla

Body Fortress is my favorite Protein Powder by far, so far.
Price: $15 for about 25 scoops
Taste: I feel like it enhances what ever type of smoothie you want it in. I haven't tried it in just milk or in water, and I don't think I ever will. But it is good in juice. It breaks down very easily in liquids, I've never had any clumping problems. And it's great for a food replacement. I feel full for 3-4 hours.
I will have to try the Chocolate and Strawberry one day.
Protein: In one scoop you get 30 g of protein, in 2 scoops, 60 g of protein.
1 scoop is 170 calories, which is kinda up there, but so protein is too, and therefore worth it to me.
It has (for one scoop):
Calcium 87 mg
Phosphorous 63 mg
Magnesium 15 mg
Potassium 120 mg

All of which are good for you in different ways. They're aren't much  for each, but it's a good amount considering it's all in one place, plus you will be eating more of each in your diet. It's a good amount so you don't go overboard. It also has super recovery blend in the ingredients.

I highly recommend trying this one out. I put 1 scoop in every smoothie I make after I workout for a recovery drink.

Toning Muscles and Help Soreness

Do you know how muscles are made? "uhh, yea. Do some bicep curls!" Wrong.... When you're weight training, it's causing microtears in the fibers. When you're resting your body after, that's when you're 'building muscle'. That's why it's best to not workout the same muscle again within a 24 hour time period. That muscles needs to rest and rebuild, while also making it stronger.

You should talk to a nutritionist or a doctor about your personal diet and vitamins you should take. Know that I am neither, I am just a person who is interesting in knowing these things and thought I would share my research and findings.

You can help muscles out though, by taking the right vitamins:

Vitamin E: Try eating some nuts or seeds after a workout. Not only do almonds provide protein, highly fats and fiber, but it's a good source of vitamin E.""This antioxidant helps cell membrane recovery from oxidative stress, such as exercise," Cuomo says. And the faster your muscles recover, the faster they'll grow." - Shape
Vitamin E helps fight cell-damaging free radicals in the body. It also helps promote immune function and help support cardiovascular health.
I, personally, take Vitamin E supplements because I don't eat nearly enough of it throughout the day. But Vitamin E is one of the nutrients where less is more. Taking too much Vitamin E in a day can cause nausea, stomach pain, weakness or even death. Consult your physician about how much you should take with your diet.

Vitamin C: not just in your oranges, boys and girls. You can find Vitamin C in all fruits and veggies. ""is responsible for the health of the blood vessels, which support the muscles’ needs for oxygen and nutrients," says John Cuomo, Ph.D., of USANA Health Sciences" "Orthopedic surgeon Leon Popovitz, M.D., of NY Bone and Joint Specialists, adds that vitamin C is a building block of collagen, a material that your body then uses to build bones and muscles.'' - Shape
Of course you can have your 1 medium orange for your recommended daily does of Vitamin C but you can also have a half a Red Bell Pepper or a cup of Strawberries
Fish Oil:  Omega-3 fatty acids are "good fats", which help to balance the "bad fats" in your diet. Omega-3's play an important role in supporting the immune system, as well as helping to maintain circulatory and metabolic health. "With the ability to enhance the effects of weight training by increasing blood flow to the muscles, reducing muscle protein breakdown, and decreasing inflammation for faster recovery, Cuomo says we should think of omega 3s—the fatty acids found in fish oil—as a secret weapon for toning up. It doesn't hurt that omega-3 fatty acids also improve insulin sensitivity, which helps prevent diabetes." - Shape
Incorporate more salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines, or albacore tuna in your diet each week. Or if fish aren't your bang try using more flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, and algae-based supplements.
I take 2 capsules of fish oil every day because I'm not a fan of fish and don't eat any of those seeds or nuts.
(Plus, ladies, have you heard of the 'Orgasm diet'? A little bit of chocolate, fish oil and no coffee. I don't want to get off topic, but I still drink coffee and O. M. G. Read more about it HERE)
Calcium: Got Milk? We've all heard about it and no one is lying! We all need calcium. But for those who aren't a fan of milk, like me you can still receive your daily dose of calcium by eating dairy products - good, I love cheese- and green veggies.

Magnesium: According to my supplement bottle, Magnesium supports essential nerve, muscle and heart function. It's also essential in the formation of bones, teeth and in converting sugar into energy. And according to Shape, most women don't get enough of this mineral! Plus, Magnesium helps relief soreness, whether from PMS or from lifting weights
You can receive magnesium by eating nuts, spinach, whole grains, legumes orrrr you can soak it in with an Epsom salt bath. Hell yea. Doing that TONIGHT!
B Vitamins: This includes a wide variety: B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), and B12 (cobalamin). "Bs play a role in everything from protein metabolism and energy production to maintaining healthy nerves and breaking down fat and carbs." - Shape
These vitamins can be found in foods such as whole grains, eggs, lean meats, legumes, nuts, leafy greens, and fortified cereals. B12 is only found in animal sources.

Vitamin D:  Boosts mood, immunity, and muscle. ""Vitamin D is required for muscular contraction, function, and growth," Cuomo says. It's also essential for bone growth and strength, and since skeletal muscles need a strong base to build off of, you can't neglect your D." -Shape
You can receive enough Vitamin D through sun exposure. But don't go crazy!

Soreness:
-Rest. Rest. Rest. Don't over work the same muscles twice in a 24 hour period.
-Massages do wonders. Get your loved one do do it for you (plus, quality time!) or go to a massage therapist
-Stretch. I warm up my body before a work out and stretch after every workout. Once a week I do yoga to stretch it all out and relax
-Icing the muscle indirectly. I have a soft small towel I use to wrap an ice pack and place on my sore muscles.
-Heat. Invest in a hot pack. (If you're a woman, you should have already invested in one, if not go get one for that time of month! I swear, it helps!) By placing heat, it helps the blood flow to the muscle. I also take scorching hot showers (I work up to it) and I directly place my sore muscles under the shower head. It helps massage it and it heats it up. 2 birds. 1 stone.
-Take NSAIDs. Ibuprofen, Noproxin or Asprin. I try not to use this as my go to, though.

How to Gain Motivation

I got hit with a triple dose of lethargy recently.
I don't know what happened. I was burning 1000+ calories a day, eating awesome, feeling great, motivation out the wazoo, then BAM! Couch , TV and ice cream, you say? Sounds wonderful! Maybe I burned myself out, maybe I just needed a break. But this is no time for a break. I'm running the Color Me Rad Run this Saturday! I need fuel!
So for the last week, I've been working out a little here, a little there. But nothing like I was used to and I dreaded every moment of it. So, you won't believe what I did: I had a crazy splurge on acid day. My husband and I went to this amazing burger joint and had THE MOST amazing burger of my life... with a bun :( BUT I did get sweet potato fries instead of the regular fries. Then I had ice cream and more snacks than I care to mention. If someone had thrown a pizza in my face I probably would have eaten it all. I over did it like crazy. But... it worked!
Today I woke up and had some scrambled egg whites with some sauteed onions, peppers and turkey sausage and some coffee. I was planning on having some fruit, but I got so full 3/4 of the way with my eggs. And I have this urge to go running, but it's down pouring outside, so I'm waiting for Joe to get home with car so I can go to the gym. I think I MAY be back!!
However, I don't recommend you do that every time you have the urge to just do nothing. I say do this evvvvery once in a while. But here are some other ideas that I do:

  • Look at my Fitness board on pinterest. I look at all the motivating words and goals and skinny... no fit people and it amps me up!
  • Make a motivation wall. I don't have one, myself, but I hear it's fun and you can be crafty, which I love!

  • Look at myself in the mirror and see how far I've come or look at photos of my old self. I don't want that back! And I don't want to stay where I am either!
  • Do some crazy, heavy, intense, deep cleaning. Even if you don't work out that day, you'd still have burned some calories, especially if you're moving stuff around. Clean until you drop!
  • Okay, this is personal, but what do I care? HAVE SEX! It does burn calories, but that's not why I'm saying this. When I have sex, I feel way better about myself than before. I feel sexy and unstoppable! Then afterwards I want to workout again! Sounds weird and it does sound like I use my husband but don't worry.. He does not mind at all! ;)
  • I tell myself "Just go for a walk or a jog for a mile or for 15 minutes. If you still don't want to, than we'll go back home" I've quit once and I was under the weather that day.

  • Ask a friend to go along with you. When others are around I push myself harder.
  • Take my fur babies on a walk
  • Challenge yourself. I set monthly goals and take photos of myself every 10 days to see the results. And that in itself is motivating to keep going.
  • Post your lack of motivation on facebook or myfitnesspal or LifeKraze. People will either respond with sympathy, kind words or encouragement or they'll chew you out. Either way, go do it!
  • Do a small workout. I like Bodyrock.tv or doyogawithme.com they have short clips of workouts that help me at least do something then I feel like doing more!
  • Drive to the gym. Go inside. People will look at you if you don't do something, so you might as well just go.

  • Change into workout clothes.
  • If you skip your workout for even just a few days, when you do it's so much harder to pick it up where you left off. You'd have to start over again. Is that really what you want??
  • Go to Zumba class. You don't feel like you're working out, you're having fun! But you're also burning calories... serious calories!
  • Go swimming. It's a light and fun activity that involves no sweating!

  • Eat a salad for lunch with lots of protein. It'll make you move! Remember: what you eat effects you. Some people think that carbs give them energy, but for me it makes me feel sluggish. I go for protein instead.
  • Play tennis or bowling! Something that is fun and requires other people.

Hardest 8 minutes of your life!!!

I seriously need these arms!

I've been doing this arm workout for the past couple of weeks but I've been slacking off. I want to do it everyday, except the days I do weight lifting (So Monday or Wednesday). This arm workout is KILLER! but thank God, it's only 8 minutes long. Based on the few times I've done it, my shoulders feel stronger, my arms are more defined, and my skin has tightened.

This workout burns 118 calories (Based on my weight: 182) in just 8 minutes. Try it out!!

5k Glow Run and Color Me Rad 5k Run

Come May, I will be running the Color me Rad 5k run (Looks fun, right?)

And the 5k Glow run in August. This is my first run of any kind (Excluding those stupid mile runs in high school) and I'm UBER excited. I started training recently but I've been running since January of this year.

I use Nike+ to keep track of all my runs and I've been getting better and better. If you use Nike+, please feel free to add me at blkenigma. Today I ran my all time best for 5k at 45 minutes and 11 seconds. A few weeks ago it was 50 minutes, then last week it was 48!
I also use myfitnesspal (you can add me at blkenigma8) to keep track of my food intake and my burned calories.

I do have a few tips for any noob runners out there that I had to learn the hard way.

  1. Shoes. Go get your feet checked out and get some highly recommended or prescribed shoes.
  2. Run on a track. Running on concrete (Especially if you're over weight) is so hard on your body. I got really bad shin splints doing this. Running on a track is just so much easier to start out.
  3. Breathing. Try to control your breathing while running. I've heard people breathing like HEE HEE HOOO or just taking a deep breath in and a deep breath out. I breathe one breath at a time, slowly. When you take deeper breaths, you use more air sacs in your lungs, which allows you to take in more oxygen to feed your muscles. Also, breathe through your belly, not your chest. This is a daily struggle for me and I'm still working on it. Read more about breathing HERE
  4. Posture. Try not to slouch when running. Look straight ahead and point your chest outward.
  5. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Constantly drink water.  I used to just drink after I ran but I found that I was more exhausted and had to stop running just to get water. I drink 3 cups (8oz each) before (not immediately before, but throughout my morning) and 5 throughout the rest of the day. When I run, I don't need to stop and drink.
  6. Friends. Find a motivational partner. Someone who is working towards the same goal, or maybe they have accomplished it.
  7. Eat. But eat healthy! Eat lots of protein and keep track of what you are putting into your body. Don't have a mentality of "oh I burned 500 calories now I can eat an extra 500 calories". Eat lots of colors: carrots, broccoli, radishes, squash, grapes, watermelon, the works.
I may add more tips as I go and if you have any tips please feel free to comment!

Free Zumba Routine

Zumba.

Have you tried it? It's AMAZING!
Shyea!! 850 calories and you don't even feel like you worked out. How can you be when you're dancing? It's not just dancing though. Zumba has a way to make me feel confident, sexy and just plain awesome!
Ok, yes, at first you kinda look like an idiot but once you get the moves down, you're unstoppable!

Anyone can do this, you feel awesome, and you form bonds with the people around you.
There are many ways of doing zumba.
You can do zumba viz Wii or xbob Kinect.
I have the Kinect version, I liked it, it's actually how I started out. But I quickly did all the dances. And there's a male instructor that I don't like. The whole point is you have to mimic the person so you can points but he does all these moves that doesn't have anything to do with zumba. Like giving a thumbs up or something, for example. Seriously? I have to mimic you doing that? And he does it a lot.

Or you can join a class at a gym. I go to the gym on base and I go to Just Ladies Fitness. I love it. There's a chick there that is actually Hispanic (I am Puerto Rican, not to be racist but I don't like the white instructors, they don't move as much) and her moves are crazy! By the end of the warm up you are sweating. By the end of the class, you are dying, if not already dead. I love it! I feel great afterwards and I burned 1000+ calories with her.

But in case you can't do any of these, this is what I do when its a rainy day and I want to burn serious calories.
Here are some free youtube video's and there are a lot out there, but this is my favorite series. It's a total of 12 videos and 50 minutes and you burn 500+ calories doing it.
Ready?

There ya go! You just burned 500-700 calories!!! Congrats! If you would like to know exactly how much you burned go to calories burned calculator app and type in your weight and that you did 50 minutes of high intensity zumba.
